There are amateur and professional competitions in each of four categories: 1) Classic (any type of bread, real butter and Wisconsin cheese), 2) Classic Plus One – a savory sandwich with a looser definition of “butter” 3) Classic Plus Extras, and 4) Classic Dessert. This year they’ve added a “Young Chefs” category for 12-17 year-olds. Cost to enter is $10 per category for amateurs and youths and $20 per category for professionals. Contestants are limited to 2 categories.
The interior of all grilled cheeses in categories 2-4 must be 60% cheese. Contestants have 15 minutes to make their grilled cheeses before they are ordered to put their “Spatulas Down!” Sandwiches are judged on presentation, taste and style. Yes, style.

To register you don’t have to have your recipe ready. You can figure that out later. The event is scheduled for Saturday April 27, 2013 at the Iowa County fairgrounds here in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.
Last year, there were over 600 people in attendance. The public is encouraged to order free tickets in advance. Here’s a link to do that.
