I know what you’re thinking. “Oh no! Not more snow pictures!” But look again. These are historic snow pictures.
Thanks to the Internet and Facebook, it seems like there are more snow pictures than actual snow. But as these old photos show, the urge to take snow pictures has been around for ages — or at least since the invention of the camera. Actually, even before the camera, there were cave drawings of people in the snow, right next to the ones where they’re wrestling. (JK –It’s our new policy to mention wrestling in every post until the IOC changes their decision. We’ll see how it goes. And for those of you wondering what JK means, here’s a link to the urban dictionary.)
Yesterday we went to the Archives at the Mineral Point Library in search of vintage snow photos for this post and Mary Alice Moore quickly produced a bunch from the blizzard of March 6, 1959, which she personally remembers. Here’s another one:
As we were sorting through those, Nancy Pfotenhauer, the photo expert of the MP Historical Society came in to set up a dedicated computer for Historical Society photos. When we explained what we were looking for, she located the photo below. She knows for sure it was after 1906 because that is when the old bank building on the corner of Chestnut and High (the one with the arched windows on the right) was built. If you’re interested in doing your own historical photo safari, head straight to the Mineral Point Archives – open Thursdays and Saturdays. And, mark your calendars for Sunday April 21, 2013 as Nancy reports that as the date for the rescheduled Houses of Mineral Point Lyceum.
