A Theater For All The People

906154_10152136243014412_2501161941457912789_o-1The Mineral Point Opera House has not one, but two concerts scheduled for this weekend. Tonight, May 2, 2014 at 7:30 Paul McComas and Maya Kuper perform their “Unplugged” show to benefit RAINN.  Click here for more details.

Sunday night, May 4th at 7:00 p.m. Harmonious Wail returns to Mineral Point.  They are described as a “Gypsy Swinging, Torch Singing, Death-Defying Love Note.” Having seen them two years ago at Alley Stage, I can attest to the accuracy of this description.  Take a listen.

And, that’s just the beginning.

Changes are underway at this historic jewel – with a new Opera House board, a new website, and even a new tagline:

“A Theater For All The People”

1960058_10152101092929412_1496065081_n-1Sounds good!  The new board plans to increase programming to appeal to a wide audience. Expect more live music, more public tours, more publicity, a new display outside the theater, continued Free Library movies on the last Friday of every month, the return of the Film Club, and more school programming.

In fact, the High School will be holding an awards concert there at 7 p.m. on Sunday May 11th. The evening will feature the Brass Choir, Brass Quintet, Saxophone Choir, Flute Choir, and Jazz Band. These ensembles are extremely talented, so mark your calendars.

1097159_10152109653584412_1866113352_o-1The concession stand is now being managed by Lynn Goninen who worked there as a teenager when her parents, the Eckels managed the theater. Julia Dailey, Mike Christensen and Ainsley Anderson are also helping in the concession booth, which now serves Rural Route 1 Popcorn.

If you want to be a part of the excitement, contact one of these board members:

Lauren Powers – President
Mike Wagner – VP
Keith Burrows – VP Finance
Anne Palzkill – Secretary
Maura Trimble
Lisa Duwell
Steve Falconer
Mike Humke
Mike Mitchell
Jerry Galle

Or just phone Lauren at 608-574-5076.

It promises to be a busy year for the Opera House as it gears up for its 100th birthday in 2015. We will keep you posted.

Glad to see some new and fresh ideas. Congrats on that. Its a little sad to see the guy who kept the place running for a long time not so gently pushed out that the door (thanks for stopping by… don’t let the door hit you on the way out!) A little recognition seems to be in order….hope you’re working on that!
