It’s no secret that sports, rally and touring car drivers love the Mineral Point area and the Driftless Region. On any day you’ll see Corvettes, Austin Healys or Jaguars parked on High Street or tooling past Pendarvis on Shakerag. They look great on these streets with the historic architecture as a backdrop. But it’s even better when the road runners are nationally known columnists and they go home to write about it.
Such is the case in the July 2013 issue of Road and Track Magazine, (p. 54) one of the most prestigious titles in the motorcar lovers’ library of good reads. This issue features 21 “Epic Routes” recommended for spirited drives in your car of choice – Porsche, Ferrari, MG, Miata or sure – even a Chevy Van.
Highly regarded auto writer Peter Egan (who lives near Madison) is a true fan of twisty roads, roller coaster runs and responsive driving machines. His recommended route goes from New Glarus to La Crosse, with stops in Spring Green at Taliesin and in Mineral Point for a Pasty at the Red Rooster Cafe.
Mineral Point is in good company. The other routes in the Road and Track “Epic Tours” cover spectacular highways across the USA from East to West Coast. The list includes, among others: Nantucket, MA; Port Angeles, WA; Asheville, NC; and the Needles Highway in SD. Any of those incredible routes will spike your adrenaline higher than a triple espresso.
Egan notes “…just get a gazetteer and go anywhere, randomly, left and right, in this area. You can’t lose. We’re hillbillies with Scandinavian (or Cornish, Swiss, or German) accents. It’s the Nordic Ozarks.”
Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.
